23章 アン、名誉事件で災難に

Anne had to live through more than two weeks

22章末に対応。 "how I'm going to live through the two weeks before school begins."

yarnは長話, ほら話の意味もある [リーダーズ+] 。アンが空想のお話にのめりこんでいたことを暗示するのか？ basketとbucketは発音が少し似ているので、それで思わず混同したのか？

nothing untoward happened

untowardは [使徒行伝,002:040] のペトロの言葉に使われる。

And with many other words did he testify and exhort, saying,
Save yourselves from this untoward generation.
他にも言葉を尽くして、彼(ペテロ)は証拠を挙げ、熱心に説いて言った、
「この困った世代から、自らを救いなさい。」

アンはペテロの役目で、マリラを説得した。説得した相手は、クラスの仲間達を含むだろう。
この後ではこう続く。 [使徒行伝,002:043]

And fear came upon every soul: and many wonders and signs were done by the apostles.
すると、畏怖念がみなの心に巻き起こった。多くの奇跡と徴が、使徒達の手で現わされたのだ。

奇跡でも徴でもないけれど、大事件がアンと使徒達の手により世に示されることになる。

they found themselves in the Barry garden ... and ripe for any enticing form of mischief

バリーの庭がエデンの園なら、熟れた(ripe)禁断の知恵の実(mischief)が誘惑している(enticing)のが、 このシーンにピッタリ適合する。

with the fear of her mother before her eyes

[Annotated AGG,p.252] では法律の起訴の古い言い回しのようである。聖書にも似た用例が見つかる。 [ローマ書,003:018]

There is no fear of God before their eyes.
彼ら[ユダヤ人と異邦人(ギリシャ人)]は神を恐れる目を持たない。

[詩編,036:001] にも同じ表現がある。

The transgression of the wicked saith within my heart, that
there is no fear of God before his eyes.
邪なる者の違犯が我が心の中に聞こえる、
彼らは神を恐れる目を持たぬ者たちだ。

挑戦ごっこの語りで堅い言い回しが多いのは、当人達がいたって真剣だからである。

Come off your perchで、お高くとまるのはよせの意味 [リーダーズ+] 。つまり、板塀の上で勝利に酔っていたジョージーが、ようやく降りてきたという意味だろう。

a ladder was leaning against the kitchen roof

梯子は創世記のヤコブの夢に現われる [創世記,028:012] 。

And he dreamed, and behold a ladder set up on the earth, and the top of it reached to heaven: and behold the angels of God ascending and descending on it.
すると彼[ヤコブ]は眠りに落ち、夢の中で梯子を見た。地面に真っすぐ据えられて、 てっぺんは天界に達していた。神の使い達が梯子を上り下りしているのが見えた。

天に至る困難な道の意味らしく、イエスを十字架から下ろす場面(十字架降下)や受難具でもある [基教シンボル事典,p.142] 。天に至る(良い子になる)困難な道としても適当だし、 十字架降下は死んだように倒れたアンの場面に合うし、アンの受難に関連する道具でもある。

I shall walk that ridgepole

イエスが砂漠で40日の修業をしていると、悪魔が誘惑にきた [マタイ伝,4:1-11] , [ルカ伝,4:1-13] 。誘惑の１つは「神殿の屋根から飛び降りても無傷なことを世間に示せ」 である。 [マタイ伝,004:005-006]

Then the devil taketh him up into the holy city, and setteth him on a pinnacle of the temple,
And saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone.
それから、悪魔はイエスを聖都に連れて行き、神殿の小尖塔に据えて
言った。汝がもし神の息子なれば、身を投げ出してみよ。何故ならこう書かれているからだ、 神は汝のために天使を遣わし、彼らの手に汝を受け止めさせるだろう、 いつなりと汝の足が石で打ち砕かれないように。

今回の事件はこれをベースにしているのだろう。 ちなみにイエスの答えは「神を試してはならない」である。 [マタイ伝,004:007]

Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.
イエスは悪魔に言った、またこうも書かれている、汝は汝が神である主を試してはならない。

you are to have my pearl bead ring

15章のアンが作った真珠の指輪のこと。 "Can I have some of those pearl beads off the old pincushion in the garret to make myself a ring?"

sliding down over the sun-baked roof and crashing off it through the tangle of Virginia creeper beneath

たぶんツタは屋根の上まで延びていて、 アンは屋根を滑る途中でせっかくのツタをぐしゃぐしゃにしながら落ちたのだろう。 下の女の子達は、屋根の反対側に落ちたので、どうやって落ちたか見えないはず。 アンが落ちたことと、ツタがばらばらになる音から、 とんでもないことになったと悲鳴をあげたのだろう。

Virginia creeper

アメリカヅタ [リーダーズ+] 。アン(Virginia)がはう/よろよろ歩く(creep)意味で、死にはしなかったが、足を折った意味か？

At sight of her Anne tried to scramble to her feet

アンはバリー夫人がまだ苦手なのだろうか。あるいは、やましい事をした気持ちがあるから、 叱られると思ったのだろうか？

I am an afflicted mortal.

マリラに憐れみを請うアンに一番当てはまるのはこれだろうか [詩編,025:016]

Turn thee unto me, and have mercy upon me; for I am desolate
and afflicted.
[神よ、]こちらを向いて、私を哀れんでくれ。私は見捨てられ、打ちひしがれているのだから。

他にも [詩編,119:075]

I know, O LORD, that thy judgments are right, and that thou in
faithfulness hast afflicted me.
分かっているのだ、ああ、神よ、あなたの裁きが正しく、あなたが誠実だからこそ私を苦しめていると。

が当てはまりそうである。
ちなみにafflictedもmortalも、泥酔したの意味もある [リーダーズ+] 。酔っぱらったような、いかれた行動をとったという意味もあるのだろうか？

suffering

[コリント書(2),001:006] [コロサイ書,001:024] [ヘブル書,011:025] [ヤコブ書,005:010] 等ではsufferとafflictが対で現われ、ほとんど同じ意味のようである。 アンがafflictedと言い、マリラがsufferingで受けたのは、良く言われる言葉のペアだからだろう。 sufferingはキリストの苦しみの意味で使われることが多い。

but there is a bright side to it, Marilla. You find out how many friends you have.

[Alpine Path,p.20] に、LMMが火かき棒の焼けた側を持って火傷した時、みんなちやほやしてくれた、とある。 これも明るい側面。

I suffered horribly and cried bitterly; yet I took considerable
satisfaction out of the commotion, satisfyingly important.
