6章 マリラ、遂に決断

Marilla Makes Up Her Mind

5章冒頭部のアンのセリフ"I've made up my mind to enjoy this drive." に対応しているのだろう。

優しい, 慈善的な [リーダーズ+] 。皮肉なのか？

We told your brother Robert...

Mr. Robert Spencerになっていないので、年下じゃないだろうか？だから弟。 1,3章ではRichard Spencerに頼んだことになっているのだが、Richardが誤りか？

I'm dreadful sorry

スペンサー夫人は自分が悪いと言っていない。

"It was our own fault," said Marilla resignedly.

スペンサー夫人が落ち度を認めることを期待していたのか？ 結局、伝言した子供に責任を被せた形なので、 マリラもこれ以上追求できなかったのだろう。

she thought Providence had much to do with the matter

マリラは敬虔なクリスチャンらしいので、 軽々しくProvidenceを持ち出して欲しくないのだと思う。 (34章でアンが出発して寂しくて泣いた晩に、 罪深い人間(sinful fellow creature)にこんなに入れこむなんて、 なんていけないことかと思うシーンがある) また、アンを手放すのが神の意志だとも思えないためでもあるのだろう。
このProvidenceは、 AGG(J):34章 のマシューの台詞、"It was Providence, because the Almighty saw we needed her, I reckon." を予告するものだろう。

providential, blessed minute, fortunate

スペンサー夫人の台詞は運や神頼みの言葉が多い。ホステス役なのでそうなるのか分からないが、 スペンサー夫人は八方美人で仕切り屋のように見える。

Flora Jane, go out and put the kettle on. ... I forgot to tell Flora Jane to take the buns out of the oven.

たぶんマザーグースの次の歌 [Dic. Nursery Rhymes] から。

Polly put the kettle on,
Polly put the kettle on,
Polly put the kettle on,
We'll all have tea.

Sukey take it off again,
Sukey take it off again,
Sukey take it off again,
They've all gone away.

[Dic. Nursery Rhymes] によると、元々はDavid Herdの"Scots Songs and Ballads" (1776)のJenny Put the Kettle On らしい。またこれの変形で、さらにこう続くものもあった。

Put the muffins on to roast,
Blow the fire and make the toast,
We'll all have tea.

Jenny, muffin/Jane, bunと対応付けられる。 お茶用にケトルを掛けてパンを焼くのは当時一般的だったろうから、必ずしも元ネタではない？

マリラをブリュエット夫人に紹介したので、たぶんブリュエット夫人の方が年上。

I forgot to tell Flora Jane to take the buns out of the oven.

タイミングの良いところで忘れ物を思い出すのは、 この件に関るのが嫌で逃げ出した、ということ？

Was she to be given into the keeping of this sharp-faced, sharp-eyed woman?

物か家畜として引き渡される感じがある。 sharpが２回使われている。後でブリュエット夫人をgimletと評したことに対応する。 sharp-facedだと抜け目の無い顔つきの意味 [リーダーズ+] だが、かえってこれを表現できなくなった。 本当にそうかはともかく、「キツネ顔」で許してね。

できたらCordeliaと呼んで欲しいこと、そうでなければeがついたAnneと呼ぶことを、 恐くて言えなかった。 原文が法律用語(?)を使っている。 アンがいかに名前やその綴りに厳格で、こだわりを持っていたかを知らせるための文章である。

To hand a sensitive, "highstrung" child over to such a woman!

sensitiveは、5章のHer sensitive little face suddenly flushed scarletで 使われた意味と、目の前で真っ青になっていることの両方？ highstrungは15章でも使われている表現。 [Familiar Quot. Archive]

マシューを理由に上げているのは、ブリュエット夫人との直接対決を避けたのか？

A blight seemed to have descended on her.に対応。

here eyes grew deep and bright as morning stars.

morning starというロアサ科の花もある [リーダーズ+] 。 ここではdawningがあるので明の明星の意味。

During Marilla's speech a sunrise had been dawning on Anne's face. ...The child was quite transfigured.

キリストの変容(transfiguration) [マタイ伝,017:002] [基教シンボル事典] に対応する。

And was transfigured before them: and his face did shine as
the sun, and his raiment was white as the light.

She looks exactly like a--like a gimlet.

gimletはwinbleやaugerに比べると小さな道具らしい。gimlet eyeで鋭い目 [リーダーズ+] 。

Then she briefly told him Anne's history...

マリラは無駄を嫌うみたいなので、話も仕事も要領が良く簡潔なのだろう。 逆に不要なことは一切しない、ということになるのだろうか。

She's such an interesting little thing.

3章ではshe's a real interesting little thingと言っている。ほとんど同じ言い方。 この言い方(little thing/creature)はマシュー、マリラ、リンド夫人と伝搬していく。

When I fail it'll be time enough to put your oar in.

put one's oar inは後からもでてくる表現。

if you only get her to love you.

アンがマリラを愛するように、でなく、いつの間にかマリラがアンを愛するようになっていく。 最初の思惑と逆になることを言っているのだろうか？
