27章 自惚れて、落ちこんで

Vanity and Vexation of Spirit

1. [Use of Quot. & Allusion,p.18] [Annotated AGG,p.285] によると、 [伝道の書,001:014] から。ここには7所かでてくる。例えば。

   I have seen all the works that are done under the sun; and,
   behold, all is vanity and vexation of spirit.

   他には、 [伝道の書,002:011,002:017,002:026,004:004, 004:016,006:009] で使われる。
2. Sir Walter Scott, Fair Maid of Perth (1828) xiv [OED] にもある。

自然と心の無意識のリンクは、AIs 40章末にも現われる。 "The trills and trickles of song from the birds in the big tree above her seemed in perfect accord with her mood."

red fieldsは赤い髪のアンで、夕暮れ時に、悲しみで(紫は受難の色 [西洋シンボル事典,p.141] )涙にくれる(霞みが涙に相当、smokeには古語で罰をうける意味もある [リーダーズ+] )こと？

long, sharp-pointed fir shadows falling over the meadow beyond the brook

長く(long)突き刺すように辛い(sharp-pointed)悲しみの影(shadows)が、 川向こうのグリーン・ゲイブルズ(meadow beyond the brook)の上に落ちかかる(falling over) だろうか。firはfurtherで一層の悲しみの影？

still, crimson-budded maples around a mirrorlike wood pool

crimson-budded mapleは赤い髪が少なくなったアンのことで、 鏡ならぬ池を覗き込んでいるのだろうか。

a wakening in the world and a stir of hidden pulses under the gray sod

地面の下に葬り去られて(under the sod)いた、秘められた(hidden)自惚れの脈動(pulses) がまたしても目覚めたということ？

Her eyes dwelt affectionately on Green Gables, ...

10章末のアンの台詞"It's lovely to be going home and know it's home," に対応している。アンだけでなくマリラにも、 グリーン・ゲイブルズが帰るのが楽しいhomeと思えるようになった。 木々の間から光を放つグリーン・ゲイブルズの光景 "Green Gables, peering through its network of trees and reflecting the sunlight back from its windows in several little coruscations of glory" の部分は、同じく10章の "Far up in the shadows a cheerful light gleamed out through the trees from the kitchen at Green Gables." に対応している。

Marilla, as she picked her steps along the damp lane

LMMの日記でも、冬が去って春が来る時の道路の悪さが書かれているが、 19世紀では今と違って舗装もされていないので、大きな街で無いかぎり、 どこの道もたいがいそんなものだったのだろう。 さらに遡ると、ジェーン・オースチンの"自負と偏見"(1813)にも、 水たまりの多い田舎道を歩くシーンが出てくる。

second-best dress

教会に行く場合はbest、会合等の外出はsecond-bestで、それ以外は普段着か？ 16章のダイアナを呼んでお茶会の時も、ダイアナもアンもsecond-best dressである。

Miss Anne

アンがアラン夫人に、 Miss Anne Shirleyと書いた手紙をもらって喜んでいたのに当てつけたのだろうか。

"Well now, I dunno," said Matthew, who, being patient and wise and, above all, hungry, ...

マシューは下手に議論すると夕食の支度が遅れることを知っている。 マリラの論点はアンが信用できないということだが、マシューは一番クリティカルな部分に触れた。 本当ならこれがuntimely argumentに発展していくのだろうから、経験上言うべきではないはず。 つまりこの文は、分かっていたのに口をだしてしまったという方が意味が通る。 誤訳かもしれないが、ここではその解釈とした。

let Marilla talk her wrath out unhindered

マリラは愚痴が多いタイプなのかもしれない。 3章"a mere man must have some vent for his emotions."、 14章"Marilla told the whole story to Matthew"と比較。

when supper was ready

先にteaと言っているので、teaとsupperはほぼ互換らしい。

Anne cowered deeper into her pillows

cowerは、AIs 40章でも使われている。 "She cowered down by her window"「アンは窓辺に小さく縮こまった」

I don't care who gets head in class or writes the best composition or sings in the Sunday-school choir any more.

つまりアンが今一番気にしていることは３つ。 クラスで一番になること、素晴らしい作文を書くこと、日曜学校の聖歌隊で歌うこと。 クラスで一番を目指すのは17章から始まった。 作文に関しては26章が背景にあり、聖歌隊は22章のアラン夫人とのお茶会がきっかけになっている。 歌や聖歌隊で歌うのが好きという点についてはあまり表に現われてこない。 ダイアナに習ったハシバミ谷のネリー(12,14章)、聖歌隊の歌でうっとりした19章程度。 ダイアナが歌をならっており、聖歌隊でたぶん目立っていたからと、 今の時代に比較して娯楽が少ないため、地域の小さなコンサートや集会で催される、 詩の暗誦や合唱、各種パフォーマンスが重要な意味を持っていたのだろう。

My career is closed.

[Alpine Path] の冒頭部 と比較。

"My career? HAD I a career? Was not -- should not -- a "career" be something splendid, wonderful, spectacular at the very least, something varied and exciting?"
「私のキャリア？私にはキャリアがあったの？『キャリア』って、 何か素晴らしいもの、驚くべきもの、少なくとも華々しいもので、 多彩でワクワクするものじゃない -- あるいはそうあるべきじゃない？」

I know what it feels like to have your word doubted.

これはトマス家やハモンド家、昔通っていた学校での経験から？ 8章でケイティー・モーリスとヴァイオレッタのことで、 "I couldn't talk of them to everybody--their memories are too sacred for that." と言っているのは、かつて作り話をしたと言われたことがあったからなのだろうか。

he wasn't an Italian--he was a German Jew.

イタリア人への偏見だが、 実際は1880年代にPEIにやってきたレバノン人移民の行商人だったかもしれない。 「若いレバノン人のほとんどはまず『行商人』として身を立てた。 ... 農民たちは最初はこの見知らぬ連中を怪しんだ...」 [PEIの歴史,p.195] とある。AGGの歴史背景は1880年代後半から1990年代前半頃と思われるので、 レバノン人の行商人は時期的にも合っている。 ドイツ系の移民が増えたのは、アメリカ革命の後にロイヤリストが到着してからのこと [PEIの歴史,p.194] (1780年代以降)。 [カナダ史,p.121] によると、ロイヤリストの階級、職業、宗派、人種、出身地域ともに千差万別だった。 つまりこのロイヤリストの中にドイツ系の人々も多く混じっていたということだろうか？
"Kilmeny of the Orchard"にイタリア人の行商人が登場する [Annotated AGG,p.289] とのことなので、LMMには行商人はイタリア人のイメージだったのだろうか。

it may be stated here and now that she[Diana] kept her word

アンがダイアナと仲良しでいられるのは、ダイアナが誠実な性格だからだと思う。 AA, 26章などに、約束したことを律義に守るダイアナが描かれている。 想像力はないしちょっと疑り深いが、何かにつけて心強い友である。 ダイアナから見て、アンはどう見えるんだろうか？ 自分に無い想像力や行動力が魅力だが、失敗の多い、 面倒を見てあげる必要がある危なっかしい友達？

It seems such a tragic thing.

既に"This is such an unromantic affliction."と断言しているのに、 「悲劇的に思える」では意味が通らない。 廃語だが、seemには〜に相応しいの意味の他動詞がある [リーダーズ+] ので、ここではこの意味で訳した。

when she went upstairs and looked in the glass, she was calm with despair.

8章末の、鏡を覗き込む自己認識の場面を参照。

shingle the hair as closely as possible

shingleは"To cut, as hair, so that the ends are evenly exposed all over the head, as shingles on a roof" [Webster1913] なので、ほとんど丸坊主に近いのだろうか。

I'd do penance for being wicked that way.

後悔、苦悩、罰というパターンはAIs, 40章でも繰り返される。

I mean to devote all my energies to being good after this and I shall never try to be beautiful again.

良い子になる努力であるが、近い所では、 25章で"I really will make an extra effort after this."と言っている。 しかしなかなか学習効果が現われない。

I will call it a snood

例えば、Walter Scottの"The Heart of Mid-Lothian"(舞台は1736年頃), chap. 9他数ヶ所に、 snoodをしたEffie Deansの記述がある。 [Proj.Gutenberg]

彼女の頭の形はギリシャ風で、青い絹のスヌードでまとめたとび色の巻き毛が豊かに波打っており...
