25章 マシュー、パフ・スリーブを主張

George Meredith (1828-1909), "The Ordeal of Richard Feverel"に登場する Richard Feverelは、父親の画一的教育方針に対して我意を通し苦難に遭遇する [リーダーズ+] 。マシューとマリラの教育上の意見の相違と、マシューがこれから試練に会うことが当てはまる。

口語で田舎者の意味がある [リーダーズ+] 。 [OED] では1851年の例があるので、この意味はありうる。

sugar

口語で、チェッ、とか、ちくしょうという意味や、人のご機嫌を取る意味がある [リーダーズ+] 。どっちも当てはまりそうだが、当時もそういう意味があったのだろうか？ [OED] ではflatterの意味の例は1923年。

Oh--well now--brown

brownには俗語で不機嫌な, うんざりしたの意味があるし、 do brownでうまくだますの意味もある [リーダーズ+] 。今のマシューの気持ちはすっかり茶色なのかもしれない。

1ポンドは454グラム。20ポンドで約10kg。干し草の種かなにかの感覚でこの量が口に出たのか？

[パンチ素描集] の絵(19世紀中庸)を見ると、男性はたいてい鼻ヒゲとほおヒゲで、女性はボンネットを被って、 裾の大きく広がったスカート姿(クリノリン・スタイル)である。 クリノリン・スタイルの風刺絵はどれも笑える。 パフ・スリーブがどんどん大きくなって、いまに体を斜めにしないとドアを通れなくなるのと同じ発想。 女性のファッションはその後大きく変わったが、 男性のファッションは、後にほおヒゲがなくなったくらいで、AGG当時(19世紀末)とあまり変わらないようである。

真珠色に包まれたbirchもcherryも、これからコンサートで栄光の光で真珠色に輝くアンのことだろうか。

21章のアラン牧師の言った台詞 "it was a feast for the eye as well as the palate."を覚えたのだろう。

crimson ulster

the Ulster Cycle(アイルランド伝説群)というのがあって、 アルスターの英雄Cuchulainn(クーフリン)と、Connacht(クナート)の女王Maev(メヴ)が戦って、 Maevが勝つという話 [リーダーズ+] 。MaevはQueen Mabという悪戯好きの妖精の原形で、 Shakespeare, "Romeo and Juliet", act i, scene 4にも登場する [Works of Shakespeare] 。 Queen Mabはアンのような雰囲気がある。
結局crimson ulsterは、アルスターでの流血(crimson)の戦い(パフ・スリーブを巡る戦い)の末に、 クーフリン(マリラ)に勝利したメイヴ(アン)の意味ではないだろうか。
