[日記(E)1,p.121, Sept. 29, 1894] と比較。

all were radiant with "the glory and the dream".

日記でも、失われたものとして登場する。この他に [日記(E)1,p.161, May 5, 1896] でも引用されている。

精神的なダメージが体に影響しやすいタイプ。胃腸は弱いかもしれない。

those pointed firs coming out against the pink sky

モミが何度も出てくるが、形や明暗のコントラストがはっきりしているところに魅力を感じているらしい。
[Annotated AGG,p.375] では、Sarah Orne Jewett, "The Country of the Pointed Firs", (1896) を挙げているが、pointed firsは何度も出てくるので、特別な引用ではないのでは？

アンとマリラはテーブルを挟んで座っている。これが通常の二人の距離だろう。8章でもそうだった。 "Anne looked at Marilla through the apple blossoms"

it will be your turn to be lazy while I do the work.

つまりアンから見ても、マリラが働いているのに外で遊びまわるのはlazyということ。 この文は、Idlewildのidleが、アンが怠けてぶらぶら遊んでいる意味で使われている傍証になるだろうか？

I can't read or sew with any comfort now.

新聞や雑誌を読んだり縫い物をするのは、マリラの日常の楽しみのひとつ。 つまり縫い物は苦手ではないらしい。それともアンのために綺麗な服を作りだしてから好きになったとか？

it was so bright and golden and fair, so free from shadow and so lavish of blossom.

マシューが亡くなる前のアンの黄金時代そのままの天気である。

she went with Matthew for the cows

cowには人を脅かす意味 [Webster1913] がある。 ここでは、グリーン・ゲイブルズの生活が脅かされることか、マシューの命が脅かされることかもしれない。

The woods were all gloried through with sunset and the warm splendor of it streamed down through the hill gaps in the west.

ここも、筋状の光が射し込む、啓示の場面である。 light を参照。

I've always worked pretty hard and I'd rather drop in harness.

実際そのとおりになったわけである。

If I had been the boy you sent for...

もし男だったらと、ムーディー・スパージョンのところでも言っている。 男の子だったらとは、アンが何度も考えていたこと。

It was a girl--my girl--my girl that I'm proud of.

結局最後まで、my daughterと言わずにmy girlと言っている。 これはマリラも同じ。 マシューとマリラがアンにとって親ではなくfriendsだったことが、 3人にとってかえって良かったのかもしれない。近からず遠からずの関係だろうか？

the frogs were singing

croak(蛙の鳴き声)は不吉の予言の意味 [ジーニアス英和] 。蛙は、2章でグリーン・ゲイブルズに到着する時、20章の呪いヶ森事件の時、 36章マシューとの最後の思い出の時の3回登場する。 蛙の鳴き声はのんびりした田舎の平和を描写しているように見えるが、 どれもアンにとってショックな大事件の直前である。 この蛙のように、凶事を予言するシンボル(wedding bell等)は多用されているかもしれない。

the silvery, peaceful beauty and fragrant calm of that night

平和な美しさも、花香る穏やかさも、心の平安を示すものであると同時に、穏やかな死の予告でもあるのだろう。
