ここで、 AGG(J):15章 のプリシー・アンドリューズと同じように、脇役のルビーの容姿や性格が詳しく述べられている。 ルビーもある面LMMの投影なんだろうか。
[日記(E)2,p.1, Feb. 11, 1910] に、自分の日記を振り返って

The first volume seems -- I think -- to have been written by a rather shallow girl, whose sole aim was to "have a good time" and who thought of little else than the surface play of life.

と言っていて、日記から読み取れるLMMと楽しいことだけ追い求める浅薄なルビーに重なるところがあるが、同時に

As a child and young girl I had a strange, deep, hidden inner lfe of dreams and aspirations, of which hardly a hint appears in the written record. ...

でもあり、ルビーの裏面に相当するのが誰にも言わない夢を持つ野心家のアンであり、 同時にLMMの内面でもあったわけである。 この後には、内省の方法も必要もなかった当時の自分のことが述べられていて、 これも「必要も無いのに本がどうとかそんなことを話題にされても嬉しくない」ルビーのことと言って良いだろう。 結局、アンもダイアナもルビーも(たぶんジョージーも)子供時代のLMM自身を反映してできた人物像なのである。 AGG(J):20章 の、アンの中のたくさんのアンは、LMMの中のたくさんのLMMに通じている。 ただそうすると、ジェーンだけが一人残るのだが...

Avery がavar(真実だと断言すること)なら、真実の証しであるエイヴリーをあげるから、 本当のことを言うように言われても拒否してしまうだろう、というのが理解できる。

語りが頭の中まで解説してくれるのは、 AGG(J):27章 のマリラの台詞、"She probably imagined that she was thinking about the Aids..."と同じパターン。

アンとダイアナの外面と内面を入れ替えると、ステラとプリシラになるのではないか？ ステラ・メイナードは、ダイアナのバラ色の健康さと黒い目に、アンの夢見がちなところを持っているのに、 プリシラ・グラントは、アンの色白なところと、ダイアナの楽しいことが好きなこと (いたずら好きかどうかは不明)を合わせ持っている。 プリシー・アンドリューズがLMMの陰であるように、 プリシラ・グラントはいたずら好き [日記(E)1,p.] だったLMMの影かもしれない。
