20章 素晴らしい想像力が裏目に

the beautiful capricious, reluctant Canadian spring, lingering along through April and May in a succession of sweet, fresh, chilly days, with pink sunsets and miracles of resurrection and growth.

golden afternoon

AGGでは河辺ではないかもしれないが、ピクニック風ではある。

this world is their heavenに解釈した。 この世を天国に見立てられる(少なくとも花から見れば)というのは、 ストイックで現実的なカルヴィニストであるマリラにしてみれば信じられないことだろう。

We had our lunch down in a big mossy hollow by an old well

[日記(E)1,p.20, May 13, 1890] と比較。

Then a party of us set off to hunt up an old well... we found it in a boggy fir hollow... Finally we all sat down under the firs on a mossy hill and made our flowers up into wreaths and biuquets.

11章で帽子に花を飾ったのはアンだけで、マリラに怒られたものだったが、 今では女の子全員(?)がアンの影響下にあって、もはやマリラは怒る気力も失せた？ 恐るべき感染力である。

One June evening, when the orchards were pink blossomed again,...

AGG(J):2章 の描写に対応する。

all the dreams, sleeping and waking, of its vivid occupant had taken a visible

アンの夢は部屋の個性を変えてしまうほど強力だったが、一方で呪いヶ森を生み出した。 20章では、夢の両極端を描くことで、アンの想像の力を読者に示している。

AGG(J):8章 末で、部屋を金と銀の紋織のタペストリーで飾る想像をしたことに対応する。

ジョージー・パイのことなんか気にしない、という意味か？ 20章の文脈とうまくつながらない。 AGG 26章だと"I never mention her[Josie Pye] at all."があるので、うまくつながるのだが。

I didn't know I starched the handkerchiefs.

hankerはあこがれる、chiefは族長等の意味 [リーダーズ+] なので、騎士(chief)が助けにきてくれるとあこがれている(hanker)王女という妄想に、 糊付けされて(starch)他のことを考えられなかった、という意味だろうか。

There are two maple trees on it and the brook flows right around it.

Victoria Islandの二本のカエデと島の周りを取り囲む川は、 あからさまにAGG 12章のアンとダイアナの水の上の友情誓約の場面を思わせる。 (Lover's Laneもカエデが生えている。maple, birchはアンやダイアナを意味すると言って良い)

Queen's birthday

AGGの女王(Queen)アンがグリーン・ゲイブルズにやって来た日(birthday)だろうか。

Both Diana and I are very loyal.

ダイアナとアンが、お互いの友情に忠実である意味だろう。

turning point

この他に、epoch, bend in the roadなどが使われている。 アンは人生の転換点を十分認識しながら生きている。つまり人生を俯瞰する視点があるということ。

Of course it wouldn't seem so important to you.

アンは、知ってか知らずか、マリラを軽く非難する言葉を発することがある。

I've been here for a year and I've been so happy.

I've beenが繰り返されているので、happyよりhave beenに強調があるらしい。 つまり、ずっといたけどずっと幸せ。

I have lost this touching faith, I regret to say, and life is the poorer than the absence of many thrills of delight and horror.
私はこのいじらしい信念(幼い頃、新聞のように印刷されたものはどれも真実だと思っていたこと)を失ってしまった。 残念なことだ。たくさんの楽しみと恐怖がなくなった人生は、もっとつまらないものに成り果てる。

とあるように、LMMにとっては、楽しみと恐怖は魅力的な人生の表と裏の関係。 呪いヶ森はこの恐怖の方であり、他の楽しい体験と切り離せないものである。

この章の前半でマリラが言った"no, not exactly sorry."を受けて言ったのだろうか。
