これから起こる凶事、アンの胸に荒れ狂う嵐と涙と苦悩を暗示している。

Milty Boulter

Miltonの愛称がMiltで [リーダーズ+] 、Miltyも同じ？ "Paradise Lost"のJohn Miltonなら、デイヴィーより1年年長だから偉そうな奴くらいの意味か？ サイモン・フレッチャーの屋根裏が天国だと言ったのもミルティー。 もしJohn Miltonの意味なら、天国を語らせたら第一人者だろう。 他にMiltonの名前では、AA, 3章にMrs. Milton White、AIs, 35章にMilton Edwardsが登場する。

He took down with typhoid fever

LMMは5歳の時、腸チフスで重態になったことがある。 [Alpine Path,p.20]

この時マリラは、アンが大切なギルバートを亡くしてしまうことで、 マシューを亡くした時の自分のようになってしまうのではと、懸念したのだろうか。

staring out unseeinglyと対で、目が開いていてもなかなか目に入ってこないアン。 視界ゼロの暗澹たる状態である。たぶん、目の前のことがどうでも良くなっていることと、 倒れそうになっているので、テーブルや壁にすがって歩いていることで、 目が見えないように見えるのだろう。 完全な対ではないが、この後もIf she had not been so blindがでてくる。

ギルバートの家の果樹園はLake of Shining Watersの学校と反対側にあって、 たぶんグリーン・ゲイブルズの東にあたる。東の切妻の窓の方向だが、 呪いヶ森の向こうなので直接は見えないはず。

belong toはAGGのキーワード。 子供の頃から帰属先を探していたアンの、最終目的地となったのがギルバート。

Christine Stuart

ChristineはChristianの女性形で、キリスト教徒らしい、隣人愛を有するの意味 [リーダーズ+] だが、ここではどういう意味だろうか？ 隣人愛なら、ギルバートを恋人でなく友達として愛した女性の意味か？ Stuartはスチュアート王家のような、つまり貴族的な、アンと生まれが違う人の意味か？

Roy Gardner

Royはフランス語のroi(王)と混同されたようである [リーダーズ+] 。ここでは王のように立派で魅力的な男の意味で良いだろう。 Gardnerはgardener(庭師)で、王のように見えたが実は庭師だった人、 ギルバートに比べて見かけほど大したことの無い人の意味だろう。
キリストの復活後、 マグダラのマリアがイエス(王と表現されることもある)を庭師と間違えたエピソードを使ったようである。 [ヨハネ伝,020:014-015]

And when she had thus said, she turned herself back, and saw

マグダラのマリアがこう言って、後ろを振り向くと、そこに見たのは
イエスが立っている姿だったが、それがイエスだとは分からなかった。

状況は聖書と逆で、聖書では王を庭師と間違い、AIsでは庭師を王と間違っている。 キリスト復活の動機を使っているのは、ギルバートが死の縁からよみがえることか、 真の愛の復活を意味するのだろう。

storm,tempest,whirlwind等は、心の中の嵐を表現するため、これまで何度も使われている。 ここでもアンの後悔の嵐の意味。

AIs, 2章の "But such moments [of transformation] never are caught, I suppose." 「でもきっと、その一瞬は見分けることなんかできないんだわ」 にある、(アンの内的)世界の変わり目の瞬間を、アンは目撃したのかもしれない。

Pacifique Buote

pacificは平和なの意味で、bootは治療,安心の意味がある [Webster1913] 。アンの心に平和と安心をもたらす人の意味だろう。 ジェリー・ブートと同じでフランス系。喋り方がフランス語訛り？。

If she had not clutched at a low willow bough

wear the willowで愛人の死を嘆く意味 [リーダーズ+] 。ギルバートを思って泣いていたアンにぴったり。 Willowmere も参照。
ヤナギは悲しみに関係する木のようである [聖書の植物,pp.155-156] 。シオンを思い出して泣いた時に竪琴を立て掛けたのがヤナギ。 [詩編,137:001-002]

By the rivers of Babylon, there we sat down, yea, we wept, when we remembered Zion.
We hanged our harps upon the willows in the midst thereof.

weeping willowはシダレヤナギだが、この竪琴のエピソードによっている [花の神話,p.324] 。
次の引用の"wood"はヤナギらしい。風に木(ヤナギ)が揺らぐようにアンの心も揺らぐ。 [イザヤ書,007:002]

if以下でギルバートの死について言ってしまいそうだったから、what ...とアンが言い換えた。 この感覚はAIs, 14章のルビーに似ている。 "It seemed as if it would make death so SURE if I SAID I was going to die" 「あたしが死ぬだろうなんて言ったら、死ぬことが確実になるような気がして」

今にも倒れそうなアン"Anne's physical strength suddenly failed her"と元気なパシフィックの対比。

幾つも山を越えて喜ばしき知らせをもたらす使者のように美しいとは、 イスラエルの神が復権する(?)という良い知らせを伝える者(天使か預言者？)のこと [イザヤ書,052:007]

How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him that bringeth good tidings, that publisheth peace; that bringeth good tidings of good, that publisheth salvation; that saith unto Zion, Thy God reigneth!

beautifulに相当する語句は無いが、他に似た表現は [イザヤ書,040:009] [ナホム書,001:015(版によっては002:001)] にもある。

グリーン・ゲイブルズに来た当初のアンも、多かれ少なかれこんな感じだったと思う。 マリラとマシューに新しい人生という喜ばしき知らせ/香油をもたらしたのも、 やせっぽちでもらい物の服を着たみっともないアンだった。

絶望の代りに喜びの香油を注ぐとは、 シオンの事を嘆き悲しんでいる人々に良い知らせをもたらす(救いを与えてくれること)こと [イザヤ書,061:003]

たぶん、恋人小径のカエデ並木のこだまで、口笛で何を吹いているのか分からなくなる様子。 AGG 20章の"echoing twilight"のようなものだろうか。

AGG 24章の"the valleys were filled with delicate mists as if the spirit of autumn had poured them in for the sun to drain"のように、太陽が飲み干す杯のことだろう。 小さな丘が交錯して、霞が溜まりやすい地形なのだろうか。 アンの祝杯の意味でもあるだろう。

a rich surprise of new-blown, crystal-dewed roses

露にぬれた満開のバラは、苦悩の夜を経て喜びに涙する(?)アン。 杯(祝杯)もバラも、アンの祝福を意味するのだろう。AGG 14章の(受胎告知の)祝福の場面のように、 聖霊を意味する鳩の代りに鳥が鳴き、聖母マリアの象徴である(白)バラが咲いている。 白バラは天で祝福を受ける霊魂を飾る花 [基教シンボル事典,p.200] 。

The trills and trickles of song from the birds

一斉に鳴くのでなく、数羽の鳥がぽつりぽつりと鳴いている様子だろう。 trillもtrickleもアンの嗚咽と流す涙の形容だろうか。 だが今は喜びに浸っていて泣いていないかもしれない？

Weeping may endure for a night but joy cometh in the morning.

For his anger endureth but a moment; in his favour is life: weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning.
神の怒りが続くのはただの一瞬。神の愛によりこの世に生まれ得るのだ。 つまり、涙を流して一晩苦しんでも、(神のおかげで)朝には喜びがもたらされる。
